Local AI in companies – briefly explained
What does “local AI” actually mean?
Local AI means the language model runs on your own machines instead of someone else's data centre. Inputs, documents and results never leave the device. There is no provider reading along and no connection that can fail. The opposite is cloud AI, where every request is sent to an external service.
Why does this matter for companies?
The moment staff paste customer data, contracts or source code into a cloud AI, that is a transfer of data to a third party – with everything GDPR attaches to it: a data processing agreement, assessment of third-country transfer, deletion concept, ability to provide information. If the AI runs locally, that transfer never happens in the first place.
How do the costs compare to a cloud subscription?
Cloud services typically bill per user per month, so costs grow with the team and never stop. Qwirbel Server is a one-time payment; after that there are no recurring fees for the AI itself. What you do need is suitable hardware: a graphics card makes sense for larger models and media generation.
Does every employee need their own licence key?
No. Qwirbel Server is built for multi-user operation: separate accounts with their own chats, folders, knowledge bases and profiles, plus roles (IT admin versus employees) and per-account rights – such as which models may be used, daily limits, or the agent's autonomy level.
How does IT keep oversight?
Through an audit log (who did what, filterable per user), a fleet overview of connected machines with live status, and a configurable content filter. Remote access for individual employees can be set up via VPN or Tailscale.
Does it really work without internet?
Yes. The licence key is activated online once, binding it to the device. After that Qwirbel works offline permanently; no further server contact is required. External AI providers can optionally be added, but that is a free choice, not a requirement.
